New to You Technique
Themed Friday Instagram Hop #23
Good day, fellow crafters. Today I present to you my submission to the Themed Friday Instagram Hop # 23! Today our theme is to create with a technique that is new to us. We hope this theme encourages you to let your imagination run wild and is a crafting change of gears after weeks of mistletoe and Santa cards! If you are inspired to create as well then be sure to post to IG and add the hashtag #themed_fridays_card_making_fun to your post!! If you’d like to join our fun little group please message @touchofmagik. Our next Themed Friday Hop will be on January 19th, 2024.
The technique that I used for creating my card is known as Fabric Fusing. I have seen this done several times but had never tried it, so for this hop, I decided to give it a try. I hope you enjoy my submission.
To create this card I first began by selecting a fusible backing that suits both fabric and cardstock. The specific one I used was the brand called Pellon Wonder Under Fusible Web, which worked fabulously. It is best practice to iron down your fabric first to remove all of the wrinkles. Then using my fabric scissors I cut the fabric and the backing slightly larger than my A2 cardstock card background panel. Next, I placed the fusible side of the backing against the backside of the fabric and used an iron, set to the appropriate temperature for the fabric (refer to the fabric and fusible backing instructions), and pressed the iron over the fabric and backing, applying steady pressure. It is important to ensure you cover the entire surface evenly so I took my time with this step just to make sure I got every inch to stick firmly. I then peeled the backing off the fusible, aligned the cardstock and fabric, and then ironed again to fuse the fabric to the cardstock. Once fused, I trimmed the excess fabric and backing to match the cardstock size.
I next tried to use the fused fabric and cardstock in an embossing folder to give it a bit of texture. I have seen projects where this worked well, however this time it did not. I think that my choice of embossing folders may have had too fine of detail to work as intended. So I abandoned that idea.
The sentiment was created using a coordinating dark blue cardstock (cut from the center of what became the mat), WoW! White embossing powder, a shape die from my collection, and the “Let It Go” stamp set from The Sassy Club. I added a few flat-back pearls for dimension and then glued the sentiment onto the panel. I then cut the dark blue mat to its final dimensions and adhered it to the background panel using double-sided tape. I then repeated the process to adhere the composite to a white card base. With that, I called the card complete.
