Polkadoodles Cardmaking & Craft Challenge
Anything Goes
Good day, fellow crafters. Today I present to you a recent birthday card that I created that was really fun to put together. While the cake itself is a complete set of dies it still allows for loads of creativity. In this particular case, I have customized the coloring for the particular recipient whose favorite color is purple but I could see this being used for a Halloween cake or maybe an Alice in Wonderland theme just to name a few options. I also included a few other items that you can read about below. I hope you enjoy my submission.
As noted earlier, the cake depicted on this card involves a comprehensive collection of cutting dies known as the Topsy Turvey Cake by Spellbinders. This set comprises 18 cutting dies, enabling you to craft the central element of the card. What distinguishes my rendition of the cake from the one displayed on the packaging, shown on the left, is primarily the selection of colors. I opted for highly harmonious colors, while the showcased image appears to have chosen higgledy-piggledy. Additionally, I am confident that the addition of metallic silver cardstock to the cake's decoration contributes to its distinctive appearance. After the pieces were cut out I took my time and adhered every thing in the proper orientation to complete the image. I then set it aside.
The next step in the process was to create the background panel. To accomplish the look I imagined for this design I utilized the Twinkle Stars Hot Foil plate from Hero Arts (HF110 and featured right), Spellbinders hot foil in the color Prism (GLF-032), and some pale purple cardstock. I carefully followed the directions for my Glimmer Hot Foil machine and in the end, got a beautiful result. I then set it aside.
The next additional enhancement to this card was by utilizing a die-cutting product from Sunny Studios called the Crepe Streamer die (SSDIE-341). I mean it isn’t officially a birthday without streamers right? I cut out several different ones in various colors and set them aside. The first thing I noticed about the end result is how well the “twist” in the die cut visually comes across, especially in the darker colors. The second thing I noticed is how easy it would be to use this same die to create a strand of DNA for a science-themed card, so a two-for-one is always a win.
Once all of my components were ready I started the assembly. I first started by adhering the streamers onto the background panel in a way that would look planned but fun at the same time. Then the panel was trimmed to its final dimensions along with a coordinating purple mat. I adhered the background panel to the mat and then the composite to a pre-cut A2 white card base. Then carefully I positioned and adhered my composite cake piece making sure to leave room for the sentiment at the bottom.
To finish this card off I added the Happy Birthday sentiment from a Stampability brand stamp set (807826) with clear embossing ink on the card, then applied a fine gold embossing powder and heat set until completely melted using my heating tool.
