My Favorite Things Color Challenge
July 2023 - Challenge #214 & Make My Monday Birthday Challenge
Good day, fellow crafters. Today I'm excited to present to you today an entry for a challenge sponsored by My Favorite Things. This entry also happens to be a perfect fit for the Make My Monday #204 Birthday card challenge so I will be entering there as well. As I often emphasize, these challenges serve as a means to break free from your typical creative patterns and stimulate your mind to think in new and innovative ways. I highly encourage you to follow the links under the banner to enter some of your own work. If you do, then be sure to tag me on it so that I can check it out. I hope you enjoy.
To create this card I began with the color pallet, pictured above, which is specific to this challenge. I very fortunately had all of the correct colors so I gathered them all up along with some white cardstock, my blending brushes, Misti stamping tool, clear embossing ink, gold embossing powder and my heat gun and set to work on the background.
My goal was to produce a more elegant and sophisticated card than my usual designs to send to an older acquaintance so I looked for a stamp set that screamed elegance and I feel as if I found it with the MFT Harmonious Hibiscus background, pictured on the left. I placed the white cardstock into my Misti stamping tool and aligned the MFT Harmonious Hibiscus background stamp in a location that would maximize the use of the paper. I next applied some clear embossing ink and with even pressure stamped the image a couple of times to be sure of coverage. I then coated the ink in gold embossing powder and heat-set it.
Once the panel had cooled it was time to add color. I went very light with the colors. Starting from the center and gradually moving toward the edges, I blended the lighter shades to achieve a gentle backdrop but to add a touch of visual appeal, I incorporated the darker hues along the edges only. While they are not bold and “in your face”, each color was represented in the background in a way that when combined with the previous steps really set the card apart. Once I had finished the ink blending I used a microfiber towel to wipe away the excess ink from the gold embossing.
To create a heartfelt sentiment I decided on one from the MFT Birthday Bears stamp set that I really liked. To give the card a bit more pop I stamped the sentiment onto black cardstock in clear embossing ink and then added the same gold embossing powder as on the card background. I then heat set the powder, let it cool then cut it out with the smallest rectangular stitched nesting die in my collection. I wanted the card base to stand out the most so I adhered it to the card background with pop dots.
The next step in the process was assembly. I used my rectangular stitched nesting dies to trim the background and a metallic gold mat down to the appropriate dimensions and then adhered them to a pre-cut A2 white card base.
