Mermaid Cove
Good day, fellow crafters. Today I am embarking on an underwater quest to present a card of mythical magic, the elusive mermaid cove. Capturing the ethereal beauty and allure of mermaids, this card brings forth a world of mythical magic and mesmerizing charm that I hope you will be inspired by to create your own work.
I am know for a lot of things but the two I think I am know for the most are saying, keep your scraps and make full use of your supplies and for this card both are completely true. The background was created sometime ago during a crafting session where I had all of my alcohol inks in use. When I had finished with the projects that required the inks, instead of wiping my glass mat clean I used some Yupo paper to soak it all up. I didn’t have a use for it at the time but when I saw the Mermaid Cove from Trinity Stamps, pictured on left, I realized that this particular background would be a perfect fit as a deep water environment for them to be swimming through. I even think the way that the various bubbles that occurred during its creation process added to the look of many small “somethings” in the water around the mermaids.
The midground elements for this card were all cut from the center of the black cardstock that will eventually become the mat in the assembly step. I choose to go with an all black motif because it helps to add a bit of mystery to what it is you are exactly seeing, even though I am pretty sure the one on the left is really Ariel…lol.
The foreground element was also created using some extra scrap white cardstock. I started by giving the scrap a fresh tear along the edge to provide some visual interest and some texture. This piece serves as the only “horizon” that the card has so this method helps to create a naturalistic look between earth and water for the viewer. I then covered the scrap in clear embossing ink and then coated it thoroughly in Sand embossing powder and heat set it with my heat gun.
Next came the assembly stage. I first trimmed the background down to its final dimensions as well as the black cardstock I used earlier as a mat. Repurpose, Reuse and Save money for more craft supplies!! I adhered them together and then to an pre-cut A2 white card base in a landscape orientation with the fold at the top. I next placed all of the midground elements onto the background and working forward so that I could then place the sand and then more of the black midground items so as to provide a greater sense of depth. Once that was completed I used a sentiment from the Hero Arts Club kit form May 2021, pictured on right, and some clear embossing ink to stamp this cards sentiment. I then coated the sentiment in WoW! embossing powder in the color Chocolate Caramel Pearl and then heat set it with my heat gun to finish off the card.
